Southern Maryland African American Heritage Guide
This brochure was created by Alchemi Design for the Southern Maryland Tri-County Council to highlight the African American history of Southern Maryland from the era of enslavement to Civil Rights. I managed the project from concept to delivery, including design, copyediting, and editorial selection. The guide was released both print and online. The print version is a six-panel brochure with points of interest on the opening side and a detailed map on the reverse. The digital version is designed like a booklet with more contributing history and background information than is offered in the print guide,
This brochure was unique in that it required combining the brand identity of Destination Southern Maryland, the Southern Maryland Heritage Area’s tourism entity, with African American aesthetics. The end result is a colorful, patterned publication that communicates the rich history of the African American community in Southern Maryland.
The guide was recognized by Governor Hogan’s office in his International Underground Railroad Month proclamation as one of the “wealth of visitor experiences…that helps us have a greater understanding of all those involved in the Underground Railroad.” The guide was also showcased on FOX5DC to highlight Underground Railroad Month with a total audience reach of 59,600.
